Watch a Bunch of Adorable Kids Freak Out Over Cow Tongue

Source: Grub Street NY

You would think in this age of MasterChef Junior and kid chefs that more youngsters would be all about tapping into their inner Fergus Henderson, but the reactions to this giant slab of raw cow tongue presented on a platter would suggest otherwise. (The kid at the 57-second mark who says, “Now you get to look at it! Look at it!” while rotating the plate is definitely going to grow up to be a chef, though.) These kids shirk away from, then eat the mystery meat — “Needs a bit more salt” seems to be the most serious complaint. Straight ahead, ...

Openings: Brooklyn Heights Dining Is Getting Some Oyster Action

Source: Eater NY

jackthehorsetavern.jpg
[Yelp]

Perennial Brooklyn Heights favorite Jack the Horse Tavern is opening the Oyster Room around the corner at 37 Cranberry Street tonight. The small space seats 16 and serves a short menu that includes five varieties of oysters hailing from both the east and west coasts, along with small plates like fried goat cheese balls with spiced honey, smoked trout deviled eggs, and roasted brussels sprouts and radishes. Drinks from the tavern will be available too. The spot should be a welcome addition to the notoriously crummy restaurant neighborhood.

Someone Invented Ice Cream That Changes Color When You Lick It

Source: Grub Street NY

Periwinkle, pink, purple.

Physicist turned wacky chef Manuel Linares has blown the internet’s socks off with a color-changing ice cream made from “entirely natural ingredients.” The invention was apparently his thesis for a master’s degree he just picked up in the field of “Creating Artisan Ice Cream,” issued by a Barcelona trade group called Asociación Empresarial Nacional de Elaboradores Artesanos y Comerciantes de Helados y Horchatas, which we’re guessing is like the Ivy League of horchatas and ice cream.

Xamaleón reportedly took less than a week to invent, and its color changes as temperature shifts and the dessert comes into ...

Al Paris’s Paris Bistro is offering a $100 package that night that includes 100 oysters, a bottle of bubbly and a room at the Chestnut Hill Hotel. A mid-week room at the hotel normally starts at $155, just for the room itself.

No word on exactly what kind of oysters they’ll be serving. “It depends on what we get in that day,” they told me. “But probably ...

You’d Have to Swim for 7 Hours to Work Off Cheesecake Factory’s Most Unhealthy Dish

Source: Grub Street NY

Heaping mounds of kcals.

This year’s Center for Science in the Public Interest “Xtreme Eating Awards” names not one but three Cheesecake Factory dishes to its top nine list of the nation’s most abominably calorie-laden chain menu items. The French Toast Napoleon’s 2,900 calories are a solid 700 to 900 more than recommended for moderately active adults, and even a slice of the chocolate peanut-butter variety of the namesake cheesecake would require three and a half hours of aerobic exercise to eliminate. That’s a lot of laps, but thrill-seekers can in fact do worse: An A.1. Peppercorn Burger, steak fries, ...

DIY Down the Shore: Paul MacDonald’s Quasimohido

For today’s installment of the DIY recipe round-up we’re finishing up with a classic. A mojito. Paul McDonald of Society Hill Society shared his spin on the summer classic. We’re not only fans of the name, Quasimohido, but the cucumber syrup which offers a fresh flavor that isn’t typical to this summertime favorite. The prep time for this drink might be a little longer than you’re used to, but you won’t regret it when you’re down the shore with drink in hand.

Beer Town: Tasting all of Samuel Adams “extreme beers”
Earlier in July, I was back in Boston to help judge the annual Samuel Adams Longshot American Homebrew Contest. And while I was there, I was privileged to take part in a special 30th Anniversary Tasting with Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Co. and the Samuel Adams brand.
On the program, the complete Samuel Adams high-alcohol, barrel-aged “extreme beer” series, and with it Koch’s narration of his company’s history of “extreme brewing.”
The tasting progressed from 1994 Triple Bock and 1999 Millennium to a full vertical flight of Utopias, beginning with the first 2002 vintage and ending with ...

Resurrection Ale House Is Changing Hands

Leigh Maida sent out a message to subscribers of the Resurrection Ale House mailing list that the her and Brendan Hartranft’s Graduate Hospital beer bar is under agreement of sale. The letter notes that the employees will stay on after the acquisition, though the fried chicken may not. The note says that the chicken might pop up at the couple’s other bars, Memphis Taproom, Local 44 or Strangelove’s.

As for the new owners, that remains a mystery.

Dear Friends of Resurrection Ale House,

It is with equal parts excitement and sadness that we write to let ...

Ari Taymor.

The Underground Gourmet’s favorite locavore kitchen on Martha’s Vineyard, Chris Fischer’s Beach Plum Restaurant, is hosting a series of intriguing dinners this summer. Unless you’re headed over on the ferry from Woods Hole right now, it’s too late to get to the Scribe Winery event tonight. But next up is hotshot Los Angeles chef Ari Taymor of Alma, who was a Food & Wine 2014 Best New Chef, and who will presumably forage the island like a bloodhound for good things to eat and will have the run of Fischer’s Beetlebung Farm for his $200 dinner on ...

A Virginia ABC store may be coming to the Courthouse area.

The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is negotiating a lease for a liquor store in the new 1919 Clarendon Blvd building, an ABC official confirmed. That’s a block away from the Colonial Village Shopping Center, where another ABC store closed last year.

ABC has applied for a construction permit for the space, but it has yet to be approved.

The store, if it does finalize its lease, would move into the new building alongside Lucky Pot Asian restaurant, Oasis Nail salon — both under construction — and ...
