One less small-plates New American restaurant for the Lower East Side

Lowlife, the six-month-old Lower East Side small plates restaurant where diners could get a $12 bowl of deconstructed borscht, closed for good on Friday, a principal confirms to Eater. Alex Leonard, former chef de cuisine of Blanca, opened Lowlife in November 2015 along with owner Hugh Crickmore (late of Mas Farmhouse and the Andrew Tarlow empire), telling Eater at the time that the New American restaurant would be “aggressively seasonal” and “aggressively local.”

The restaurant’s sudden closure came as a surprise to staff, but the source (who requested anonymity ...

Levain Bakery, and Its Tremendous Cookies, Are Moving to a Bigger Space

Source: Grub Street NY

Arguably the best.

While Levain Bakery’s rich, buttery cookies are humongous — each weighs a whopping half-pound — its 400-square-foot Upper West Side home is uncomfortably tiny. After 21 years, it will move two blocks away, to a larger 3,000-square-foot space at 351 Amsterdam Avenue, but it will still keep the 74th Street original. This will surely mean more cookies for all — as well as, most likely, expanded operations. (New cookie flavors? Additional kinds of other pastries? Wholesale potential?) Take note that when Grub recently ordered a box for local delivery, the cookies arrived still warm.

There’s Only One Midtown Diner Left — Enjoy It While It Lasts

The Midtown III at 28 S. 18th St. | Photo by Jared Brey

In a few years’ time, the eulogy for the downtown diner might be regarded as a literary genre unto itself.

They seem to disappear rapidly these days. Little Pete’s is still running, though its existence is imperiled by a planned hotel project. The Midtown IV near 20th and Chestnut was replaced a few years ago by El Rey, an upscale Mexican restaurant by Stephen Starr. And yesterday, news broke that the Midtown II at 11th and Sansom will close next week, which will leave the Midtown ...
