The James Beard Taste America Tour Is Stopping in Philly

The dinner, packed with star chefs, hasn’t been here since 2013

Apparently having the James Beard Foundation’s top chef and top restaurateur in the country, plus the best Mid-Atlantic chef, earns you a spot on the foundation’s annual Taste America tour. The tour stops in Philly on Friday and Saturday, October 13 and 14, with a benefit dinner and cooking demonstrations. Money raised goes to the foundation and to a local culinary student through the Taste America Scholarship. The tour, which last came to Philly in 2013, visits 10 cities total this fall.

South Philly Food Co-op Is One Step Closer to Opening

The South Philadelphia Food Co-op — a member-owned retail grocery store and community hub in East Passyunk — has been in the works since 2010.

While there’s no projected opening date yet, the co-op kicked off a $1 million capital campaign to fund the store’s completion and startup costs back in May. And today, they announced that they’re already a third of the way to their goal.

So far, the campaign has raised more than $320,000 towards opening the co-op, which will be located just off the East Passyunk strip in a 3,400-square-foot space at 2031 South Juniper ...

Maine-style seafood shack chain Luke’s Lobster is adding a new location east of Broad Street.

In addition to their Rittenhouse spot at 17th and Moravian Streets, the new outpost at 17 South 11th Street will be their second in the Philly area.

The chain specializes in lobster rolls and other shellfish dishes, with several locations across the northeast United States as well as one in Las Vegas and five in Japan. The 400-square-foot space combines some offerings from Careaga’s popular Argentinian cafe in Graduate Hospital with a retail space that will offer handmade kitchenwares from Argentina and her own woodcrafts, like cutting boards and small furniture, that she makes at Philly’s NextFab workspace. Luke Holden and Ben Conniff are opening a second Luke’s Lobster in Philly. The new quick-serve seafood spot is going into 17 S. 11th Street, on the other side of Broad from the original Rittenhouse location.
