Capriotti’s to Sling Year’s Supply of Subs on 40th Birthday

Local Capriotti’s fans will have a shot to win a year of free sandwiches later this month.

The Delaware-based sub chain at 1800 M St. NW will celebrate the company’s 40th birthday on June 22 by slinging a year’s supply of Bobbie sandwiches to the first 100 customers who walk through the door, according to representative Shelby Lopaty.

Capriotti’s defines a year’s supply as 52 subs, or one for each week of the year.

Ababa Ethiopian Restaurant opened in the former Casa Oaxaca space at 2106 18th St. NW today, with a deal for locals. Adams Morgan residents can get 20 percent off menu items for a month, owner Alem Kassaye said.

New Bar Brings Barbecue to Former Stetson’s Space on U Street

There’s a new destination on U Street for smoked meat and booze.

Exiles, the tavern taking over the former Stetson’s space at 1610 U St. NW, officially opened to the public over the weekend, according to co-owner Brian Hillery.

The bar’s food menu includes smoked chicken wings and beef brisket, barbecue pulled pork and an all-day breakfast sandwich made with pork sausage, bacon, cheddar and a fried egg. At the bar, patrons can order local beers, wine and cocktails like the “Bourbon Smash,” a 19th-century concoction made with Bulleit bourbon, mint leaves, lemon and simple syrup.

Unconventional Diner is scheduled to open at 1211 9th St. NW in “winter 2016,” according to new signage we spotted on the restaurant’s windows over the weekend.

Mintwood Place co-owner John Cidre and Hu’s Shoes and Hu’s Wear owner Eric Eden, who are behind the eatery, have released few details about their new venture. But a news release last year called the restaurant a “high-end diner concept.”

As many as two dozen people were spotted lining up for free donuts at the Dupont Circle Krispy Kreme (1350 Connecticut Ave. NW) around 9:30 a.m. today. And it’s likely to get crazier later, employees at the store said.

The donut chain is slinging free pastries all day today as part of its National Donut Day promotion. Patrons can visit any Krispy Kreme for a free donut of any variety, the company said in a press release.

Dunya Restaurant (801 Florida Ave. NW) appears to have closed its doors for good last weekend, according to a somewhat cryptic Facebook post. A PoPville reader first spotted the possible closure.

“It’s time to say goodbye… FAREWELL weekend at our bar,” the post reads. “We want to say thank You all for supporting us and enjoying with our service, staff and DJs.”

Dunya, which served Mediterranean fare and cocktails in the space, opened in 2013.

A new bar is slated to bring a long list of seasonal cocktails and a fried chicken-centric menu to U Street later this year.

The forthcoming hangout — dubbed the Service Bar — is in the works at 926-928 U St. NW, according to co-owners Glendon Hartley, Chad Spangler and Chris Willoughby. (Side note: The building’s landlord once planned to open a 24-hour restaurant called Just Chicken in that spot, but those plans fizzled months later.)

When Service Bar opens, its employees will serve a menu that includes a changing list of cocktails and five or six food options, according to a statement from a representative for the bar.

There’s a new Chipotle in town.

The national chain famous for its huge burritos opened a new location at 1010 Vermont Ave. NW on Sunday, according to employees at the store. Signage for construction of the Chipotle went up earlier this year.

The new location — which seats roughly 30 people — joins Chipotle’s other outposts in Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Chinatown, Mount Vernon Triangle and elsewhere.

A new crab-centric eatery is slated to open on 19th Street this summer.

Patrick Morrogh, who owns Arlington’s Quarterdeck, plans to open a new restaurant called “District Anchor” at 1900 M St. NW, according to a recent filing with the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA).

The new restaurant will begin serving crabs and beer in the same space as longtime 19th Street hangout Rumors sometime this summer, according to a source familiar with the opening. But Rumors won’t close, the source said. Locals will be able to go whole hog for free during a pig roast at Dirty Martini later this week.

The bar and lounge at 1223 Connecticut Ave. NW will host a pig roast Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., according to a Facebook event post.

Olivia’s Diner (1120 19th St. NW) has closed its doors for good, according to a sign on the front door of the business. A PoPville reader first spotted the closure.

A “European-style cafe and bar” is set to open blocks away from Dupont Circle.

The new business, Emissary, will open in the space below Dupont Circle Yoga (2032 P St. NW) later this summer, according to owner Elias Hengst, who also co-owns Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar and ‎Dupont Circle Yoga.
