It matters what our presidents eat

Source: Atlanta Magazine

Adrian MillerPhotograph courtesy of UNC Press What our presidents eat says a lot about their tastes, but also about our times. In 1939, FDR served hot dogs to King George VI. (Bold move.) And President Obama once slurped on $6 pork noodle soup with Anthony Bourdain. (Hip move.) Adrian Miller, author of the James Beard Award-winning Soul Food who worked in the White House as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton, has written a new book on just this topic called The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed Our First Families, from the ...

We wanted to tell you the story of Atlanta’s unsung kitchen workers, but we can’t.

Source: Atlanta Magazine

Immigrants play an enormous role in the mechanics of running a kitchen. “As any chef will tell you, our entire service economy—the restaurant business as we know it—in most American cities, would collapse overnight without Mexican workers,” said Anthony Bourdain in 2014. “Some, of course, like to claim that Mexicans are ‘stealing American jobs.’ But in two decades as a chef and employer, I never had ONE American kid walk in my door and apply for a dishwashing job, a porter’s position—or even a job as prep cook. Mexicans do much of the work in this country that Americans, provably, ...

On Saturday, Pleasant Pops co-owner Roger Horowitz was sitting in the back seat of his mother-in-law’s car, doing errands, when he got a once-in-a-lifetime text from the on-duty manager at his Adams Morgan cafe: “POTUS here in five.”

He thought it might have been a joke.

“We had very little notice,” Horowitz says, of President Barack Obama‘s visit during D.C.’s sixth annual Small Business Saturday. “We’ve had some famous customers that I’ve recognized before, like Ben Olsen from D.C. United, but no one like ...

At 701, a Penn Quarter pioneer, a new chef keeps the wit and whimsy alive

Source: Washington Post Food Section

Back when Ashok Bajaj was the owner of a single dining room, Bombay Club on Connecticut Avenue, he used to stroll along a stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and the Capitol and marvel at how so much historical ground embodied so few places to eat. As hard as it is to imagine now, the area that became Bieber-hot Penn Quarter was questionable enough that when Bajaj opened his second establishment there, in 1991, he parked on Pennsylvania Avenue rather than the iffier Seventh Street.
