Beer Pick: Second Self Triforce IPA

Inspired by the video game series, Second Self Beer Co. is releasing its new Triforce “slightly hazy” IPA on Saturday with a really geeky party at the brewery’s taproom in West Midtown

The fun and video games include a costume contest and Triforce tacos from Real Mexican Vittles. There’s also a Hyrule-inspired quest around Atlanta for fans of Second Self. Participants can search the city for missing items at participating bars, restaurants and stores to win free merchandise. The map and compass required to make the trek can be picked up at the brewery during the parrty.

In honor of all those shenanigans, ...

Twain’s Purgatory to Paradise. Photo by Tori-Allen PR.

Though it sometimes flies a bit under the radar, Twain’s Brewpub & Billiards in Decatur has been a fixture of the Atlanta craft beer scene for many years.

Maybe most notably, before he left to found Creature Comforts in Athens, David Stein developed the recipe for the much beloved, and often elusive, Tropicalia IPA at Twain’s, while pioneering several more beers there.

In late 2016, Mike Castagno took over as Twain’s head brewer, bringing with him a wealth of experience as a research chemist, and a whole bunch of awards as a ...

Celebrated for draft ales at its pubs around England, and around the world for its distinctive bottled beers, such as Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Taddy Porter and Imperial Stout, the company has never been much for marketing in the modern sense.

Bob Townsend’s Beer Pick: Three Taverns 2017 Inceptus Georgia Wild Ale

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

At Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, Belgian-born brewmaster, Joran Van Ginderachter, has been experimenting with a beer called Inceptus (Latin for “beginning”).

It’s a spontaneously fermented wild ale with an unlikely back story.

During the December 2013 Atlanta “Snowpocalypse,” Van Ginderachter decided that the temperature was just right to wrangle some wild yeast from the air around the brewery for what he would call a “Georgia wild ale.”

Since then, he’s used that “mother beer” to infect wine barrels filled with a wort made with pilsner, wheat and spelt malt. Successive generations of Inceptus have taken on a variety ...

The label on the can of Creature Comforts new Table Beer features the enticing words “for food and friends.”

But the limited edition ale will be available to fulfill that promise for only a very short time. And that’s a shame, because like the Athens brewery’s other recent seasonal offering, Automatic Pale Ale, it’s perfectly suited for year-round enjoyment.

If you’re wondering where the name comes from, table beer is a style that’s been around for a long time, originating in ...

One of the side benefits of The Festival — the expansive international beer tasting presented in Atlanta in August by Shelton Brothers Importers — is the number of rarities that made it to the city for the first time, and even stuck around for a while after the event.

Certainly, the Chinese beers from Jing-A Brewing Co. are a prime example of that.

Somewhat shrouded in mystery, the brewery was founded by two expat friends living in Beijing. ...

Beer Town: ‘Atlas of Beer’ gets globe-trotting start in Kennesaw

The book is subtitled “A Globe-Trotting Journey Through the World of Beer.” And Hoalst-Pullen and Patterson are aided by Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver, who wrote the forward and offers notes and tasting tips throughout the chapters.

Bob Townsend’s Beer Pick: Scofflaw Sneaky Wheat

Scofflaw Brewing celebrates its one year anniversary at noon on Saturday. And what a year it’s been.

The brewery that literally started in a basement, and birthed one of Atlanta’s biggest buzz beers, Basement IPA, grew by leaps and bounds in just 12 months.

Along the way, there were triumphs, trials and weird moments that appeared unprecedented for a brewery that seemed to suddenly surface out of nowhere.

I latched on to the story early, and probably wrote more about Scofflaw than many readers or rival breweries might consider cool. But I’m a ...

Bob Townsend’s Beer Pick: Terrapin Hammer 58 Pale Ale

Baseball season is heading toward playoff time, college and pro football are kicking off, and Atlanta is crazy for the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, United FC and Major League Soccer.

For me, anyway, it’s the best time of year to be a sports fan. And it’s the best time to enjoy a well-made pale ale — a venerable British style that American craft brewers made their own with all-American ingredients, most notably the likes of Cascade, Chinook and Centennial hops.

Call it ingenuity or serendipity, but bright, citrusy American pale ales make a perfect match for all the foods we love ...

Beer Town: A month of milestones for Georgia beer

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

September marks some major milestones for Georgia beer drinkers.

Senate Bill 85, which for the first time allows breweries to sell beer directly to consumers, took effect on Sept. 1.

In response, you’ll find new and improved taprooms with extended hours and a host of special offerings at most breweries around the state. But stay tuned, because it’s likely to take several months to fully figure out what all the changes will mean for the bigger beer scene.

In Atlanta, two very different breweries, Red Brick and Scofflaw, will celebrate important anniversaries this month. And in many ways, they ...
