Little Pearl will be a coffee shop and wine bar like no other in Washington

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

Little Pearl chef B.J. Lieberman has created a gravlax sandwich that’s an homage to the Swan Oyster Depot, the historic seafood counter in San Francisco where the kitchen layers cured salmon on a slice of sourdough. It’s a lovely nod to the city’s famous bread. “It plays to my Jewish sensibilities,” says Lieberman, who will […]

9 Atlanta coffee shops and cafes where you can get work done

Source: Atlanta Magazine

East Pole CoffeePhotograph courtesy of Jonathan Wade As a freelance writer, technically all that I really need to do my job is a laptop and a wi-fi connection—but comfy furniture, a good soundtrack, readily available caffeine, good snacks, plentiful outlets I don’t have to passive-aggressively battle a stranger over, a certain decibel level of background noise, an aesthetically pleasing environment, and decent lighting help, too. (Is that too much to ask?) While everyone’s individual definition of an ideal work spot varies wildly, there are a handful of places in Atlanta that have nailed the formula in Goldilocks-fashion: not cavernously dark, ...

Source: Grub Street NY

There’s a story that a few of the wistful regulars from my old diner, Joe Jr.’s, which used to occupy a narrow little space in the Village on the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and 12th Street, still like to tell about the time Louie the waiter died of …

Philz Coffee makes its D.C. debut with a drippy store in Adams Morgan

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

Not to start a East Coast-West Coast war that would rival Tupac vs. Biggie, but I must confess: I don’t get the attraction of Philz Coffee, the San Francisco-based roaster that made its D.C. debut last week with a large, sun-dappled shop in Adams Morgan. The space is attractive enough, situated on the ground floor […]

Swing’s Coffee on G Street is closing temporarily, just shy of its 100th anniversary

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

The timing couldn’t be worse for Mark Warmuth. Ongoing building renovations will force the owner of Swing’s Coffee to shut down his G Street NW shop on March 25, just weeks before the roaster had planned to celebrate a major milestone. “The gut punch is that this is our 100th anniversary year,” Warmuth says. The roaster, […]

You may never again have to wait in line at Starbucks

Starbucks now lets customers order drinks without waiting in line, thanks to its updated app. We’ll let that sink in for a second. For us, waiting at Starbucks is up there with sitting at the DMV. So testing out the app’s newest feature — it went nationwide this week on both iOS and Android devices after a series […]

Kyoto cold-brew coffee is good to the last drop, if you’re patient

The device at Chinatown Coffee Co. looks like the jury-rigged still that Hawkeye and Trapper built to make moonshine in their tent on “M*A*S*H.” Or perhaps like the world’s largest coil condenser bong. Actually, the contraption brews coffee, one agonizing drip at a time. The Kyoto cold-drip tower is the latest gadget to improve our morning […]

They’ve gone through two pop-ups, many construction delays and, at the end, a last-minute tangle of red tape with D.C. government. But brothers Chad and Alex McCracken will finally debut their specialty coffee bar, the Wydown, today at the Louis at 14th. When the door swings open this afternoon, the 26-seat Wydown will quickly become a […]

The Wydown coffee bar expected to open next week

Source: Washington Post Food Section

When it comes to specialty coffee, Washington’s name has been rarely, if ever, whispered in the same breath as Seattle’s or New York’s or San Francisco’s — except perhaps as a point of contrast to America’s best cities for a cup of joe. But the District’s reputation has taken a dramatic turn in recent years, with the openings of Qualia, Peregrine Espresso, Filter, La Colombe, Dolcezza Coffee Lab, the Coffee Bar, the new program at Mockingbird Hill and Peet’s small armada of shops.

Qualia launches reserve line with rare Yemen coffee

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

When I mentioned that the new Yemen Haraaz-Red Marqaha at Qualia Coffee tasted like hazelnuts and chocolate, owner Joel Finkelstein looked almost disappointed, which puzzled me. I loved the flavors captured in this cup. “I think you should taste it in a few days … It’s a little too fresh,” countered the Qualia roaster this […]

Kaldi’s Coffee’s cutting-edge Steampunk system is a tempestuous brewer

Kaldi’s Coffee owner Tsega Hailemariam says his new caffeine emporium in Silver Spring is the first on the East Coast to employ the Steampunk brewing system. Perhaps that means nothing to you. Until Tuesday, it meant nothing to me, and I love cutting-edge brewing equipment as much as the next coffee geek who bores his […]
