Coming Attractions: Maria Loi Plans New Loi, Plus a Restaurant Downtown

Less than three months after closing her eponymous Upper West Side restaurant, Maria Loi is coming back. The “Martha Stewart of Greece,” has two new restaurants on the horizon, in addition to her new book, The Greek Diet, from Harper Collins.

After more than 20 years as Chat ‘n’ Chew, 10 East 16th Street will morph into Little Sal’s at the end of the month. Although owner Andrew Silverman (who also owned Chat ‘n’ Chew) had originally planned to open the red sauce Italian restaurant as a late summer pop-up, he’s since changed direction and decided to move straight into a permanent concept. “It will be a home-style, culinary driven neighborhood Italian joint,” he explains.

Daily News columnist Vance Lehmkuhl talked to owners Matt Quinn and Jeff Poleon about their start-up, which has been selling out of Pennsport’s Grindcore House, Milk & Honey market, Elixr, and other spots.

Coming Attractions: H&F Alums Greg Best, Regan Smith Behind Krog Street Market’s Final Anchor Restaurant

besteater0918.jpgThe concept and name of Krog Street Market’s final anchor restaurant are not yet known, but the folks behind the project have been revealed. Greg Best and Regan Smith will be in charge of the space across the floor from The Luminary.

Details are scarce, but “the full-service location will certainly offer food and drink in a comfortable manner,” according to Best. The restaurant is expected to be open nights and weekends, with a carry-out option for lunch on weekdays.

City Winery, which combines founder Michael Dorf’s lover of wine, food, and music, currently has locations in New York, Chicago, Napa Valley, and Nashville, and Dorf says Atlanta and Boston are the top candidates for further expansion. Save the Date: Twin Smokers Barbecue Opening Downtown on October 6

The eatery comes from Legacy Restaurant Partners, the company behind Article 14, Der Biergarten, and STATS, among others.

“Our menu features Southern-style barbecue with hickory-smoked chicken and pork, and Texas-style barbecue with mesquite-smoked beef brisket,” said Legacy corporate executive chef Chris Blobaum in a release. An “extensive bourbon selection and beer program” will be offered as well.

eater414_bantambiddy.jpgLenox Square released clearer time frames for its forthcoming restaurant openings. Bantam + Biddy will open its third location next to True Food Kitchen in the fall, followed by its fourth location at Avalon later this year.

Wokdragon, a Chinese eatery focused on daily prepared ingredients, will open in the Lenox Fashion Cafe come October. Garrett Popcorn Shops, originally from Chicago, will serve gourmet popcorn on the plaza level near Bloomingdales in November. These openings follow Zinburger and True Food, which opened in June.
