K-BBQ Factory brings more exceptional Korean barbecue to Duluth

Source: Atlanta Magazine

The grill in action at K-BBQ FactoryPhotograph by Jennifer Zyman. I am going to say something possibly scandalous, but I think Atlanta’s Korean barbecue scene rivals Los Angeles and New York. When I was growing up in Atlanta, it seemed like our only Korean options were Mirror of Korea on Ponce de Leon and Hae Woon Dae on Buford Highway. But now it feels as though a new Korean barbecue restaurant pops up every month, each with some newfangled kind of grill or just a different spin on the variety of side dishes offered. K-BBQ Factory is the latest offering from ...

Since opening in 1997, beloved Decatur Square beer mecca Brick Store Pub has spawned two successful sister destinations in the immediate neighborhood, Leon’s Full Service and Kimball House.

But the new venture from partners Dave Blanchard, Mike Gallagher and Tom Moore, Good Word Brewing and Public House in Duluth, is much further removed, both in mileage and concept.

Blanchard, Gallagher and Moore joined two former Brick Store employees, longtime general manager Todd DiMatteo ...

Brewpub from Brick Store Pub team now open in Duluth’s Parsons Alley

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

A long-awaited brewpub from the team behind Decatur’s popular Brick Store Pub opened its doors in Duluth this week.

Good Word Brewing and Public House opened in the Parsons Alley development at 3085 Main St.

Partner Todd DiMatteo and the rest of the Brick Store team announced their intention to open Good Word more than a year ago. The brewpub will focus on “approachable beers and mixed fermentations such as sours and IPAs,” Di Matteo told the Atlanta Business Chronicle last year.

The spot’s current beers include selections such as the Donna Maria, a dry saison named after Di Matteo ...

O4W Pizza’s Anthony Spina is bringing the Grandma Pie back to Old Fourth Ward

Source: Atlanta Magazine

The Grandma Pie at O4W Pizza in DuluthPhotography by Jennifer Zyman Even though O4W Pizza closed its namesake Old Fourth Ward location more than a year ago, the sting from the pizzeria’s schlep to the suburbs never truly went away for ITP-ers. The Duluth location, which opened last September, is bigger and in many ways better than the original—owner Anthony Spina perfected his pizza-making and added pastas, appetizers, and salads to the menu. But the convenience of having the Grandma Pie in your backyard is hard to beat. Pine no longer—Spina is bringing his pizza back to Old Fourth Ward ...

Make it dessert first – no regrets – with this restaurant’s bread pudding

Praline Bread Pudding Souffle at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen / Ligaya Figueras

DISH OF THE WEEK: Praline Bread Pudding Souffle at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

Have you ever walked into a restaurant and ordered dessert as your main affair? I hadn’t, until recently.

No decisions about which meat or three sides. Skip the soup of the day. Give me the dessert menu and take me to straight to sugar purgatory.

“The first bread pudding order of the day!” said the server.

Oh, the liberation! Not quite. It  brought on a mea culpa moment. That I somehow need to explain this dessert lunch ...

You need to eat at the Jusgo Supermarket food court in Duluth

Source: Atlanta Magazine

The cold skin noodles from Xi’an Gourmet HousePhotograph by Jennifer Zyman I’ve never stopped and counted how many just Asian supermarkets there are in metro Atlanta, but I wager the number is larger than you think. And what’s so cool about them is that they don’t sell just groceries. Instead these mini-malls offer everything from a dramatic Korean visor that blocks out all the sun to slippers that sweep the floor as you walk to a toilet with an integrated bidet. But the best part, undoubtedly, is the food court. While I have my favorite Asian food courts around Atlanta (more ...

O4W Pizza

Source: Atlanta Magazine

Detroit-style pizzaPhotograph by Caroline C. Kilgore Granted, O4W Pizza is not exactly new. Owner Anthony Spina, a New Jersey native, opened the original pizzeria in Irwin Street Market in January 2015. The Inman Park stall was short-lived (it closed in June 2016), but the concept was not. One month later Spina relaunched O4W in Duluth, a gutsy move considering his most loyal customers lived ITP. The larger space can accommodate proper table service and—important in calculating this list—an expanded menu, which now includes the best arancini in the metro area as well as chicken parm heroes and handmade cavatelli. And ...

9292 Korean BBQ

Source: Atlanta Magazine

Photograph by Caroline C. Kilgore Good Korean barbecue is the sum of its parts. At 9292, each part is a cut above: a rainbow of daily changing banchan (complimentary side dishes) like pickled radishes and soy-glazed peanuts; prime-tasting brisket, short ribs, and ribeye; charcoal grills; and a clean, modern space. With their slim-cut jeans and cheery smiles, the servers are practically indistinguishable from the K-Pop stars gyrating on the flat-screens lining the walls. It’s a marvel to watch them navigate the labyrinth of semi-private dining cubicles, each table inset with a stainless steel bin to hold the glowing coals. Need ...

Thank U Chicken crushes Atlanta’s Korean fried chicken game

Source: Atlanta Magazine

The Thank U Chicken at Thank U Chicken.Photograph by Ted Golden. About ten years ago, Korean fried chicken became a bona fide American trend, and Atlanta’s vibrant Korean restaurant community jumped right on board. KFC joints (“Korean fried chicken,” not a certain Kentucky-based fast food chain), once clustered mainly in Duluth, popped up all over Atlanta. But as the hype faded, most of those spots closed, and the question of where to get super crunchy KFC in Atlanta became a little bit of a fruitless hunt. I stopped seeking it out—and stopped craving it. But on a trip to Seoul ...
