Propósito taco truck sets up shop in Lindbergh

Source: Atlanta Magazine

Lake Dawson, the corporate chef for Tropical Smoothie Cafe, and his partner Michael Boynton, have a side job and it involves tacos. Boynton, who is native of Austin, Texas, found himself seeking out quality, authentic tacos everywhere he went. The idea for a taco truck was born. Propósito, the duo’s new blue and white food truck that sits in the parking lot of the Exxon at the corner of Lindbergh Drive and Piedmont Road, opened two weeks ago. It serves breakfast and lunch tacos with classic Mexican flavors such as barbacoa and al pastor pork, along with quesadillas and icy ...

Feeling lucky? This food truck lets you spin a wheel for a 99-cent pizza.

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

The prize wheel isn’t one of those hand-cranked spinners with a clicker on top and a teeny-tiny sliver devoted to the only gift anyone would care to claim. No, this is an electronic iPad prize wheel, and half the slots will earn you a 99-cent pizza. There’s a caveat: You have to hand over your […]

Jennifer Zavala Goes Rogue With Illegal Tamale Truck

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Jennifer “Fear” Zavala is not a fan of red tape.

We don’t hear from Philly chef Jennifer “Fear” Zavala that often, but when we do, there’s always a good story there, whether it’s her insane wedding, that time she singlehandedly foiled the world’s dumbest caper with a dirt-simple South Philly sting operation, or tales of her cannabis catering. And now, she’s back with a rogue South Philly tamale truck. Er, make that a tamale van.

Yumbii opening brick-and-mortar taqueria Wednesday in South Buckhead

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Yumbii, known as Atlanta’s first food truck, will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant, also known as Yumbii, at 1927 Peachtree Road N.E. in South Buckhead, serving lunch and dinner.

The Brookwood Village taqueria is the first in a series of openings planned for the expanding brand. The 1440-square-foot restaurant will offer counter service, takeout and seating for dine-in guests.

Atlanta native Carson Young rolled out the first Yumbii food truck in 2010, serving Asian-Mexican-style tacos, and kicking off the Atlanta  food truck movement.

“We’ve been overwhelmed and humbled by the enthusiastic response to Yumbii ...

This is the best Cuban sandwich in Atlanta

Source: Atlanta Magazine

The Cuban sandwich right off of the press at Buena Gente.Photograph by Jennifer Zyman. Atlanta arguably lost all of its good Cuban sandwiches way back in 2008 when Havana Restaurant burned down and Kool Korners closed. No matter where I looked, I couldn’t find one that was up to par. The bread wasn’t toasted enough. The cheese wasn’t melted enough. The roast pork had no flavor. And, most importantly, the sandwich was not pressed hard enough to make all of the ingredients fuse together (a key factor in a Cuban sandwich’s success). So when I spotted Buena Gente’s Cuban sandwich ...

The Founder of Fojol Bros. Food Trucks Now Has a Maryland Commune and Retreat

Source: Washingtonian Food

I’m standing at the corner of 14th and U streets, Northwest, with a toothbrush and bug spray in my backpack, when Justin Vitarello pulls up in his gray Ford Transit van.

The 15-seater looks relatively sedate compared to the circus-like vehicles Vitarello used to drive as the founder of Fojol Bros., one of DC’s first food trucks. After hitting the streets in 2009, the St. Albans and Brown University grad built up a fleet of three mobile eateries named after made-up lands inspired by real ones: Merlindia (Indian food), Benethiopia (Ethiopian), and Volathai (Thai). The staff of his “traveling culinary carnival” ...

Red Hook Lobster Pound Launches a Sidewalk Cart in DC Today

Source: Washingtonian Food

The Washington area has hundreds of food trucks serving every cuisine imaginable—Hawaiian, Russian, Indian, Peruvian. But the same diversity and trendiness factor hasn’t really caught on among sidewalk carts, which still predominantly sell hot dogs.

Could that change? Food truck pioneer Red Hook Lobster Pound is branching out with a sidewalk lobster cart dubbed Mini-ME (like Maine, get it?). Owner Doug Povich calls the “Rolls-Royce of hot dog carts.”

Povich initially launched the cart next to the Ballston Metro last month, but it debuted in DC today at 11th and K Streets, Northwest. The cart will rotate between the spots as well ...

Why The Heck Are There No Breakfast Food Trucks In DC?

Source: Washingtonian Food

The team behind Politico’s morning newsletter Playbook is serving coffee, egg and cheese sandwiches, and breakfast burritos from a food truck this week. It’s a gimmick, to be sure, designed to promote the publication’s new authors. But little do they realize the untapped market they’ve stumbled into.

That’s because there are no breakfast food trucks in DC, and the city desperately needs one.

If you happen to know of one, please comment below, but even DMV Food Truck Association executive director Najiba Hlemi says she isn’t aware of any District food trucks operating in the mornings. There are a couple of ...

Pao bhaji is a delicious Indian dish. So why aren’t more people ordering it?

Source: Washington Post Going Out Guide

Pao bhaji is not much to look at. You might generously call it slop. “It’s mush on a plate,” said Harriti Shah, whose family runs the Chatpat food truck and its sister bricks-and-mortar location in the International Square food court downtown. Lurking behind that humble veneer, though, is something unexpected that will fire your taste buds with […]

This is the Best Spam Musubi in DC

Source: Washingtonian Food

If you’re skeptical about “the best” when it comes to Spam, try Spam musubi. The popular Hawaiian snack originated in the islands around WWII when canned meat was abundant, and Asian immigrants made the most of it—essentially turning porky slabs into onigiri (Japanese rice balls wrapped with seaweed).

Today the salty, savory combination is a quick-grab staple in Hawaiian convenience stores, and like with so many low-brow foods, chefs have toyed with elevating it (yes, even “house-made Spam” is a thing). A few places around DC serve Spam musubi, though the absolute best is aboard the Hawaiian food truck, Abunai...
