With His Tasting Menu Restaurant in Ivy City Delayed, Chef Matt Baker Turns To Sandwiches

Chef Matt Baker was planning to open his Ivy City tasting menu restaurant, Gravitas, near the end of this year. Then in May, a wall on the building collapsed, and the city put a stop-work order on the whole development. Now, the ambitious restaurant is delayed until at least March or April.

It’s the final week for Paul Ruppert and chef Johnny Spero’s Petworth crab house, which wraps up its summer run on Sunday. The team has yet to announce what kind of restaurant (or bar) will land in the space next, but we know one thing for sure—it’s last call for steamed Chesapeake blues and Old Bay fries.

When: Tuesday through Friday, 5 to 10 pm; Saturday noon to 10; Sunday noon to 9 pm. Closes Sunday, September 4.

Gravitas Restaurant and Greenhouse Bar Will Open in Ivy City

If you start at the very top of chef Matt Baker’s forthcoming restaurant, Gravitas, you’ll see the focus of his first solo venture, debuting in Ivy City this winter. The roof is split between a bar located in a working greenhouse, and a garden that will supply the restaurant with ingredients for its vegetable-driven menus.
