Chipotle’s E. Coli Outbreak Spreads to 3 More States

Officials still aren’t sure about the identity of the offending ingredient.

The CDC has released updated data on the E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle now that various local and state officials have run tests and done tallies. It has spread for a third time: 52 people in nine states, instead of 45 in six states. Those states (roughly in order of oldest to newest) now include Oregon, Washington, California, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Costco’s Chicken Salad Is Giving People E. Coli, Too

The nasty bug’s latest victim.

The year of a million E. coli scares is now the year of a million and one: At least 19 people in seven states have gotten sick after eating the rotisserie-chicken salad at Costco, the CDC reports. Unlike full Chipotle, Costco went ahead and yanked the tainted product from stores nationwide.

A Hardee’s Worker Might Have Exposed Thousands of Customers to Hepatitis A

Here’s one more story that will make you think twice before heading into a fast-food joint: Two South Carolina locations of the chain allegedly let an employee work two weeks’ worth of shifts while infected with hepatitis A. Authorities believe several thousand customers visited the Spartanburg County stores during this period, any or all of whom presumably could have consumed food or drinks touched by this individual — a serious enough situation that the state issued an emergency alert. So far, health officials have vaccinated 4,295 people who fear potential exposure.

Hep A Outbreak at Bronx Sushi Shop Sickens 5

Sushi pizza: not so appetizing.

Bronx sushi spot New Hawaiian Sea has been temporarily shut down after officials discovered four customers and one worker were infected with hepatitis A. Those unlucky enough to have dined at or eaten takeout from the restaurant between September 7 through 19 are thought to be at the greatest risk; symptoms including fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and jaundice develop approximately one month after infection. The city is now giving out vaccinations in the Bronx, and if administered up to fourteen days after initial exposure, the shot can prevent the disease from occurring. More information here...
