Jean-Georges Restaurant Is 20 Years Old — and It’s Still the Crown Jewel of the Vongerichten Empire

Source: Grub Street NY

Time is often unkind to restaurant fashions of decades past. Like scrunchies and sun-dried tomatoes, what once was trendy can now seem dated. Twenty years ago, when the rest of us were wearing Girbaud jeans, Jean-Georges Vongerichten built a restaurant that seemed — and still seems — almost effortlessly stylish. …

Week in Reviews: Pete Wells Gives Four Sparklers to Jean-Georges

[Facebook]

Pete Wells finds that Jean-Georges Vongerichten‘s flagship restaurant is still at the top of its game. Well, mostly. The spring rolls aren’t perfectly crispy on one of his visits, and the critic finds a weird energy at the host podium. But he loves the overall dining experience:

Over and over, Mr. Vongerichten takes risks that are almost shocking. A little canal dredged into a pool of sweet parsnip purée is filled with a fruity riesling raisin vinegar, straight up. Taste it alone and you pucker, but swirl it into the parsnips with a forkful ...

Wells Wagering: How Many Stars Will Pete Wells Give to Jean Georges?

Source: Eater NY

2014_pete_wells_JGVjpg
And speaking of Jean-Georges Vongerichten, for this week’s review, Times critic Pete Wells will file on the chef/restaurateur’s fine dining flagship. Frank Bruni was the last Times critic to visit Jean Georges — he gave it four stars in 2006. Wells was impressed by the restaurant’s casual counterpart Nougatine two years ago. But what will he think of the fancypants restaurant next door? Will he uphold its four star status, like he did with Le Bernardin back in 2012? Or will he take a star away, like he did with Daniel last summer? Place ...

Is four-star futuristic chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten planning a restaurant in Battery Park City’s glossy new Brookfield Place shopping center? That’s the million dollar question. Brookfield will also house sit-down restaurants from Parm and Jose Garces, as well as casual grab-and-go options from Mighty Quinn’s, Dos Toros, Umami Burger, Blue Ribbon Sushi, and Num Pang. He notes: “This holds true even as women have advanced to top tiers of pastry, wine service, dining room management and ownership in these same restaurant groups.” [Bloomberg]

Openings: Vongerichten’s Inn at Pound Ridge Now Open Upstate

Source: Eater NY

theinnatpoundridge.jpgJean-Georges Vongerichten opened The Inn at Pound Ridge, his rural Westchester restaurant, this week. It’s housed in a building that dates back to 1883 and that was, for a long time, actually an inn. Now it’s been refurbished into a two-story restaurant, with stone walls, wood floors, and working fireplaces.

The Inn falls into the growing family of ABC restaurants (Vongerichten tells Grub Street he was originally going to call it “ABC Country”), and serves a menu of locally-sourced dishes that range from a bacon gruyere burger to roasted lobster to several pizzas and pastas. The chef, Blake Farrar...

Stadium Dining: Madison Sq. Garden Is Getting Jean-Georges Tacos

Source: Eater NY

2013_madison_square_garden.jpgNow in the final stage of its “transformation” project, Madison Square Garden just made three notable additions to its dining options, two of which involve Mexican food. La Esquina will have an outpost in the Garden Concourse, where it will serve several types of nachos, plus sides like grilled corn. But the real heavy-hitter is Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s second Garden outpost (the first being Simply Chicken): Cocina Tacos by Jean-Georges. At this stand, expect tacos that, at least on paper, are exactly the same as the ABC Cocina tacos, with fillings like glazed short rib with habanero relish and ...
