Source: Eater NY

2014_john_mcdonald_%21234.jpgAs rumored, downtown heavy-hitter John McDonald and his team will indeed be taking over all the food and beverage operations at Jason Pomeranc‘s Sixty Soho hotel (formerly Sixty Thompson). A rep confirms that McDonald is in the process of finding a chef for an Italian restaurant in the space that currently houses Kittichai, and he’ll also be creating new projects in the outdoor rooftop area that is now home to A60, and the portion of the lobby where Thom Bar sits. The John McDonald rumor du jour is that the prolific downtown restaurateur (Lure, B & B, El Toro Blanco) is teaming up with the Sixty Soho (formerly Sixty Thompson) hotel for two new projects. Rumor has it that McDonald is working on a bar and a restaurant that will debut after the hotel undergoes a top-to-bottom renovation. Currently, the boutique hotel is home to Kittichai, Thom Bar, and A60. It’s unclear if any of those operations would close to make way for the new McDonald project, but it ...

At last, the new steakhouse in the old Veselka Bowery space from Lure Fishbar‘s John McDonald and Josh Capon finally has a name: Bowery Meat Company. Here’s a rendering of the awning with the title, which, as you see, is easily shortened to BMCo. Last fall, McDonald said that this new restaurant would have a “major red-meat selection” with “a big oyster bar and a few other twists.” Peter Kane, of Beauty & Essex and Stanton Social, is also one of the partners at this new project. For four days next week, Soho favorite Lure Fishbar will be closed for renovations. It’s basically a Lure pop-up inside B & B. Some of ...

WEST VILLAGE — John McDonald and Josh Capon are currently adding a private dining room space to El Toro Blanco, which they plan to have open by April. It will have space for 38 people, and McDonald tells Eater that the decor will be “club-like, with wood paneling, carpet, and vintage Mexican art/objects.” When not in use for a private event, the dining room will open up to walk-ins to cut down on the wait. Work is now being done on four major restaurants along the Bowery, all of which are slated to open later this year. Here’s a look at the current state of Cherche Midi, Keith McNally’s new French restaurant in the space that housed his short-lived trattoria Pulino’s. The windows are papered over, and one doorway has a plywood shield. Knowing McNally, the facade of the restaurant will soon be protected by an impenetrable, two-story plywood wall, with a guard to shoo away food bloggers.

The kitchen at this new McNally restaurant will ...

LureFishbar%20Interior.jpgThis week, Josh Capon, John McDonald, and Josh Pickard opened the Miami outpost of Lure Fishbar. The dining room and menu are similar to the ones in NYC, but it’s not an exact recreation of the original. In a chat with Eater Miami, McDonald explains: “[Y]ou can’t force New York culture and New York rules on other markets. I think you see that happening a lot and it’s a big mistake.” [Eater Miami]

First Word: Lure Fishbar’s Robert Collins Planning Tribeca Restaurant

Source: Eater NY

2013_churascuria_tribeca12.jpgAt last night’s Community Board 1 meeting, longtime Lure Fishbar GM Robert Collins presented plans for a Mexican seafood restaurant in the West Broadway space that currently houses Churrascaria Tribeca. A sample menu included raw bar items, ceviches, tiraditos, salads, soups, grilled fish dishes, steaks, and chops. The application also noted that Collins and his crew wanted to have
a “full-time mixologist on staff lighting drinks on fire.” So, it basically sounds like a cross between Lure Fishbar and El Toro Blanco, but with flaming drinks. Tribeca Citizen reports that the board unanimously voted to approve the liquor ...

Last fall, John McDonald and Josh Capon unleashed El Toro Blanco on the Village. A week later, Hurricane Sandy hit, knocking the power out of their stylish Mexican follow-up to Lure and B & B. Luckily, there was no damage to the space, and so the team started all over again a week later, restocking the guacamole bar and serving their light take ...

First Word: Is Amanda Cohen Planning a Dirt Candy Spinoff ?

Source: Eater NY

12amanda-cohen-dirt-candy-comic-cookbook.jpgThe agenda for next month’s CB3 SLA Licensing committee meeting lists an application for Dirt Candy (Big Candy LLC) at 86 Allen Street. Presumably, this is chef Amanda Cohen and the team from the East Village’s two-star vegetarian restaurant Dirt Candy. Ms. Cohen has yet to confirm that she’s eyeing the space, but the original location is tiny, and Dirt Candy is very popular, so a move to bigger digs would make sense.

A few other tidbits from the agenda: An unnamed company is applying at 8 Extra Place, but we know that this is David Chang and the ...

Rumormongering: John McDonald Rumored for Veselka Bowery Space

The amount of restaurant world firepower and credibility necessary to turn Extra Place from a charmless alley created by real estate developers into an East Village dining destination may be greater than commanded by David Chang alone. Luckily someone else is in the picture nearby (and we’re not talking L’Apicio).

Rumor has it that downtown restaurateur John McDonald, having just closed his beloved Merc Bar and just narrowly saved his even more beloved Lure Fish Bar, just signed a lease on the former Veselka Bowery space.

NYCWFF: Josh Capon & Guy Fieri Win the NYCWFF Burger Bash

Source: Eater NY

Last night, Lure Fishbar’s Josh Capon and real American hero Guy Fieri tied for the People’s Choice award at the New York City Wine and Food Festival’s Blue Moon Burger Bash. Capon was serving the same burger that helped him win this competition three times in the past, and Fieri was peddling a mac and cheese-topped something-or-other from his Times Square Donkey Sauce factory, Guy’s American Kitchen. The Spikey One was working the crowd, hard, all night, so it’s not surprising that he got a lot of tokens from the attendees.

Le Rivage’s Paul Denamiel won the Judges’ Favorite ...

The sudden closure of Soho standby MercBar last night triggered an outpouring of farewells and nostalgia from some of the many regulars that frequented the place during its 20 plus years in business. John McDonald tells the Wall Street Journal that it was simply structural deterioration, not a lack of customers that made him decide to close the doors for good, and that he did it without much notice because he “didn’t want there to be too much build-up.”

Racked NY hears a rumor that clothing company Tory Burch will take over the space, but that rumor ...

Fear not, Lure Fishbar fans: Restaurateur John McDonald has negotiated a new lease with landlord Peter Brant. Earlier this fall, there were rumors that Brant was planning to raise the rent by an “exorbitant amount,” which could have forced the restaurant to leave its home at 142 Mercer Street. Many longtime customers voiced their outrage at the rumors on Twitter, using the hashtag #savelurefishbar. But now, a new deal has been worked out, and Lure is here to stay.

John McDonald tells Eater: “Ultimately, Peter Brant and I worked out a 10-year ...
