Chick-fil-A opens doors on Sunday to feed stranded passengers at airport

Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A has long upheld the practice of closing on Sundays. Even when it added a presence at new sports venues SunTrust Park and Mercedes-Benz Stadium this year, the fast-food chicken chain kept its concessions closed on Sunday game days. But yesterday, Chick-fil-A made a rare decision to work on a Sunday.

When a massive power outage at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport left thousands of passengers stranded , Chick-fil-A mobilized employees to prepare and deliver sandwiches to hungry travelers.

According the Chick-fil-A spokesperson Jackie Jags, “The mayor called about 10 p.m. and asked for assistance. We immediately mobilized staff ...

Dish of the Week: Biscuits at Bar Mercado

If there’s one thing in the South that I cannot get enough of, it’s biscuits. Buttery, flaky buttermilk biscuits are the best, and they make ‘em right proper here in the South. The fun, though, is not in the ranking, but in exploring all the renditions out there  – including biscuits with a Spanish bent on the brunch menu at newly opened Bar Mercado at Krog Street Market.

What makes these biscuits unusual – and so appealing in flavor ...

DISH OF THE WEEK: Artichoke beignets at Del Frisco’s Grille

Say “beignets” and I picture myself at Café Du Monde in New Orleans. I’m sitting down to a plate filled with puffy squares of deep-fried choux pastry covered in powdered sugar, sipping café au lait and watching carriage horses clip-clop along Decatur Street.

Alas! An escape to the Crescent City isn’t happening any time soon. Yet as the holiday season hits full throttle, I know I’m going to need an escape from the shopping craze – along with ...

French toast casserole with bacon-persimmon compote, prepared at the Big Green Egg culinary center. CONTRIBUTED BY HENRI HOLLIS

I recently paid a visit to the Big Green Egg headquarters on DeKalb Technology Parkway that overlooks I-85.

The plan was to prepare five dishes — steak, chicken kebabs, salmon, a pizza and a French toast casserole — to experience the versatility of the appliance.

“Anything you cook in your kitchen you can cook on a Big Green Egg,” one of my tutors, Amanda Egidio said as we walked outside to get the fire party started. “Except deep-fried turkey,” tutor Taylor Shulman ...

DISH OF THE WEEK: Praline Bread Pudding Souffle at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen

Have you ever walked into a restaurant and ordered dessert as your main affair? I hadn’t, until recently.

No decisions about which meat or three sides. Skip the soup of the day. Give me the dessert menu and take me to straight to sugar purgatory.

“The first bread pudding order of the day!” said the server.

Oh, the liberation! Not quite. It  brought on a mea culpa moment. That I somehow need to explain this dessert lunch ...

Recently, I came across an article that mentioned a study published last year in the Journal of Positive Psychology. Cooking, ...

DISH OF THE WEEK: Cinnamon roll at Radial Cafe

Since opening 18 years ago, Radial Cafe has given residents of Candler Park good reason to rise and shine.

No, we’re not talking about clean-eating dishes like the grain bowl or vegan hash. Nor are we talking about those I-can’t-believe-they’re-meatless biscuits and vegetarian gravy. Or the vegetarian sausage. Or the gluten-free pancakes.

We’re talking about the cinnamon roll.

This from-scratch, fluffy round of yum arrives to the table with a knife jabbed into the center. Cut and ...

Australians have always impressed me with their spiritedness.

Take, for example, my former next door neighbor, Sal. She’s a rugby-playing Aussie who I recruited for my soccer team. When she showed up for a game, boy, did she show spunk – chanting and hollering for us to “go get ‘em!” When she took that energy to the ...

Dish of the Week: Fig Bread at Buford Highway Farmers Market

I am fixated on figs.

The $1 fig bread at Buford Highway Farmers Market is the latest way I’m getting my fill. Called pan de higo, it’s stuffed with chunks of dried Mission figs and the entire roll gets dusted in sugar. I made the mistake of buying only one loaf when I should have grabbed a dozen.

Maybe my love affair with this ancient fruit isn’t my fault. Perhaps I was born with it. ...
