Founding Farmers Sets an Opening Date at King of Prussia

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Back in May, we told you about Founding Farmers, the restaurant group owned and operated by the North Dakota Farmers Union, opening a huge, 14,000 square foot restaurant at the King of Prussia Town Center. We knew a lot about the group behind the concept: that it was owned by the 40,000 member strong NDFU…

TALK Is Preparing To Shake Up Walnut Street (Again)

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

TALK–the new acronymical restaurant from Tim Lanza and Andrew Kochan (Tim Andrew Lanza Kochan, get it?)–is building out in the former L’Image Photography Studio space at 2121 Walnut Street. This is an address we’ve been watching for quite some time because it’s… Well, it’s perfect. At least from the outside, it has everything a Philly restaurateur could want in 2017.

Which is to say its on the Schuykill end of Walnut Street. And really, that’s all that matters.

Seriously, what’s been one of the biggest small openings of the last several months? Res Ipsa. And Res Ipsa is ...

Urban Village Brewing Company Opens Today At The Schmidt’s Commons

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Urban Village/Official

Pizza, beer, fried pickles and pork belly sandwiches.

This is Urban Village, a new brewpub and pizza joint which stands as the latest attempt at bringing some life to the old Piazza in Northern Liberties (now called The Schmidt’s Commons).

Urban Village opens today (June 1) with a menu made up of “hyper-seasonal” small plates, plus brick-oven pizzas. The beer is crafty and seasonal. The spirits behind the bar are local, there are Pennsylvania wines by the glass, and the employees are all called “Urban Villagers” — which, I imagine, is gonna get old real fast.

Is Taste in Phoenixville Going to Be a Game-Changer for Philly’s Vegans?

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Yesterday, I got a fairly run-of-the-mill press release announcing the impending opening of a new restaurant. Taste, which is going into the former home of the Sand Castle Winery wine shop at 236 Bridge Street, is scheduled to open on Thursday, May 18, and will be a vegan restaurant, seating about 50, with another 20 seats at the bar.

And sure, a high-end vegan restaurant in the ‘burbs? That’s news. Especially one that has a bar. But that wasn’t what intrigued me. This was the line in the press release that caught my eye:

“Situated in the heart of ...

TALK, Andrew Kochan’s New Restaurant, Has An Opening Date

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Last week, we had the news that Andrew Kochan and Tim Lanza from West Philly’s Marigold Kitchen were going to be opening a new restaurant together. Kochan is the owner. Lanza is going to be his executive chef. And this is big news because, together, the two of them have already been running one of the best, most creative restaurants in the city. And now they’re going to be moving in on one of the most booming mini-neighborhoods in the entire city–that odd little stretch of Walnut Street on the edge of Rittenhouse that is already home to Vernick ...

Marigold Kitchen’s Andrew Kochan Is Opening A Restaurant On Walnut Street

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

2121 Walnut Street (the former L’Image Studio) has been an address we’ve been keeping an eye on for a while now–one of those that none of us here at Foobooz World HQ could believe has been vacant for as long as it has been. As a matter of fact, I was just in for lunch at Res Ipsa–which lives just down the street at 2218 Walnut–and as soon as I got back to the office, the first thing I wanted to talk about wasn’t the egg sandwich with herbed long hot spread (which was awesome, by the way), but ...

Jezabel’s Studio Bringing Mate, Cookies and Crafts to West Philly

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Jezabel Careaga, owner of the Argentine restaurant Jezabel’s Cafe at 26th and Pine, has just picked up a second space in West Philly. Specifically, a tiny, 400 square foot space at 208 South 45th Street.

And this new place? It’s not going to be like the original Jezabel’s. While there is a kitchen, the space is too small to be run like a traditional restaurant. So instead, Careaga is going to turn it into something…else. Into a place for tea and cookies, crafts and demonstrations. She’s calling it Jezabel’s Studio and has plans to open it sometime in the ...

Tredici Bryn Mawr is Getting Close to an Opening Date

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Gred Dodge/Facebook

That above picture is what the dining room at the new Enoteca Tredici in Bryn Mawr looks like right now — not finished, obviously, but a lot closer to finished than it has been. And no, we don’t have the name written backwards. According to a recent Facebook post by owner Greg Dodge, they had to switch up the name a little in order to keep it from getting confused with a different local business — Wayne’s Tredici Italian Market.

In that same post, he also gave us the news we’ve been waiting to hear: That the 5,000 square ...

Evil Genius Is Opening Their Fishtown Brewpub Next Week

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

See that? That’s what 1727 North Front Street looked like when the crew from Evil Genius Beer Company first got their hands on it in October of 2015. It was an old carriage factory, falling to pieces in an overgrown lot. But over the past 18 months, they’ve torn everything down, cleaned everything up, and on Wednesday, March 8, they’re going to officially open it up to the public as the brand new Evil Genius Brewpub–which is nothing but good news for their new Fishtown neighbors and everyone else in Philly.

Evil Genius installed a 15-barrel brewing system once ...

Some More Details from Jose Garces on His New A.C. Restaurants

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

A couple days ago, we put together everything we knew about the three new restaurants by the Garces Group that are opening at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. But as we get closer and closer to the actual opening date (which will be March 4 for all three properties), we’re getting more specific detail.

This time, from Jose Garces himself.

I talked to him today from the dining room at Olon, where he was overseeing the final run-up to opening. We talked about a bunch of stuff (including the opening of his new Buena Onda location at 1735 Chestnut ...

Jose Garces is Opening Three Restaurants at the Tropicana in Atlantic City

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Atlantic City is apparently collecting Iron Chefs. With Bobby Flay, Wolfgang Puck and Geoffrey Zakarian already there and Michael Symon opening Angeline at the Borgata sometime in the next few months, the city is well on its way to a full house (see what I did there?).

But now, with opening dates set for the three completely new operations from the Garces Group that we told you about last year, they’re flush with ’em. And Jose Garces is even going to sneak in ahead of Symon because he’s got opening dates set for all three locations (all of which ...

Here’s Everything We Know About The New Philadelphia Distilling Complex

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Philadelphia Distilling, home of Bluecoat Gin, Penn1681 Vodka, Vieux Carre Absinthe and a different vodka that tastes like Old Bay, is getting some new, fancy digs at 25 East Allen Street in Fishtown, in the former home of the Ajax Metal Company.

This is a big expansion–a serious investment by one of our largest local distillers that will be both a fully-functioning production facility and a showcase for its product. So here’s everything we know.

For starters, the space itself is huge–part of the enormous Live Nation / House Of Blues entertainment complex. Philadelphia Distilling’s part of it covers ...

Otis & Pickle’s Speakeasy Has A Menu

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Otis & Pickle’s Speakeasy

You guys remember Otis & Pickle’s Speakeasy, right? It’s the new bar project being put together by Charlie Collazo of the Institute, located deep in South Philly in the former home of Cooley’s Bar at the corner of 3rd and Porter. Back when we first reported on the place, we knew three things about it.

One, it was going to be a “speakeasy” focused on cocktails and, of course, pickles.

Two, this:

Collazo got the name from a couple of characters he met who over the summer while working at the Creamery Beer ...

Here’s What You’ll Be Eating When Rooster Soup Company Opens Next Week

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

We patiently await its arrival

So here’s the deal. We’ve been waiting on good news from Rooster Soup Company for a LONG time. The first serious mention of it on Foobooz came all the way back in June of 2014 when we announced the launch of the Kickstarter that was used to fund the start-up of Rooster (and which ultimately raised over $150,000). And we’ve been keeping an eye on things ever since.

But now things are finally getting real. Rooster Soup has an opening date, a mission plan and, most important (to us, anyway), a menu.

So here’s what ...

Center City Restaurant Group Moving On Brewerytown

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Between Crime & Punishment’s brewing operation, the new Flying Fish Craft House (with Bar Rescue‘s Brian Duffy as a partner) and SpOt Burger’s first brick and mortar location on West Girard Avenue, Brewerytown is going through a bit of a food and beer resurgence.

And now, with the announcement that Center City’s Tavern Group (Tavern On Camac, UBar, the Tavern Restaurant) is moving into the neighborhood with a restaurant and taproom, things there are only getting hotter. They’re taking over a space at 1216 North 29th Street that was once home to Sarah’s Place and, before ...

If You’re Living In University City, 2017 Is Going To Be A Very Good Year

Beiler’s Bakery Opening Soon in University City

Source: Philadelphia Magazine » Foobooz

Back in August of last year, the folks from Beiler’s Bakery (which I just mentioned in my very hungry, early morning post on how I am resolved to eat more pies this year, and also where to find the best ones) opened their first outside-of-Reading-Terminal-Market location on Harrisburg Avenue in Lancaster.

This was a pretty big deal, but buried inside that pretty big deal was an even BIGGER deal, which was that the family was planning on expanding again soon — this time in Philly, likely in University City.

Well, guess what? That’s exactly what’s happening. They have ...

Friday Saturday Sunday: Cocktails and dining

Yesterday marked the rebirth of Friday Saturday Sunday off of Rittenhouse Square. But it is only the name that returns after the 18-month redo. The first floor is now where the bar action happens. A 14-seat marble bar pops in bright white. On opening night, bartender Paul MacDonald was already confidently pouring cocktails like the Oxford Comma, Nicaraguan rum, lemon, coffee, red wine and soda; and the Control State, vodka, lime, grapefruit, honey and savory bitters.

The food is prepared by chef/owner and Garces vet, Chad Williams. The menu features a selection of raw ...
