Rant Buzz Killers Swirling a glass of wine with a flick of the wrist can tell you a lot about what you’re drinking. The movement oxygenates the wine, releasing some volatile compounds that interfere with its true aroma. Raising the wine to eye level to look at its “legs” (the tears descending inside the glass) gives you an idea of its viscosity and alcohol strength. But the sight of anyone performing these acts with a glass of bubbly makes me hysterical. So you like to smash bubbles? You want to kill something that is alive?!?!? Champagnes and other sparkling wines ...
“As a winemaker, as soon as I see someone spitting in the tasting room, they get a ton more respect from me,” says Jordan Harris of Tarara Winery in Leesburg. “It’s a sure tell that the person is either in the trade, very responsible, more interested in taste than a buzz, or has been tasting […]
Keep an Open Palate Rkatsiteli. This white-wine varietal from the country of Georgia was introduced to our area by winemaker Dennis Horton. Its wine drinks like a Spanish Albariño. Petit Verdot. A red blending grape that also does well on its own, producing full-bodied wines that pair nicely with steaks. Merlot. “Merlot is treated much […]

Last May Nick Elmi went to work on securing a liquor license and expanding into the former coffee shop that is next door to his Laurel. The initial plan was to add some seating and install a bar. But here we are more than seven months later and that hasn’t happened.

Located at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Buckhead, just about 10 steps across the hotel entrance is Del Frisco’s Grille. Never having been, I likened it to a Capital Grille, based solely on the menu. However, it is more like the Capital Grille’s younger brother, with it’s more modern style and loud music.
I tried the Kilt Lifter cocktail, and it was exceptional. Made with gin, St. Germain, elderflower, and a splash of Tabasco, it was a perfect balance of a stiff drink with a botanical flair if that makes sense. I don’t recommend drinking on an empty stomach. Where they ...
